Tel Abyad, Syria − On Saturday, Kurdish armed forces of Jabhat al-Akrad arrested four members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) including the commander of the group in the city of Tel Abyad, Abu Musab.
Following the arrest, battalions of the ISIS in the city of Tel Abyad −where Kurds constitute a majority− headed to the village of Yabisa, 5 km west of the city, after constant attempts to establish barriers in the area.
The Kurdish forces intervened to prevent the Islamist fighters from installing barriers. Clashes occurred resulting in the arrest of four members of the Islamist group, including Emir Abu Musab , commander of the ISIS in Tel Abyad. Clashes between both parties didn’t stop since Saturday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the jihadist commander in Tel Abyad was captured “as battles raged”.
“Battles pitting fighters from the Kurdish Fighters brigade against ISIS and other groups are raging on in several areas of Tal Abyad in Raqa province, after (Kurdish) fighters captured ISIS’ emir in the city,” said the monitoring group.
Observatory director, Rami Abdel Rahman, told AFP the commander’s nom-de-guerre is Abu Musab, though it was unclear whether he is Syrian or foreign.
The clashes in Tel Abyad broke out after jihadists ambushed a school that Kurdish fighters in the town were using as a base, the observatory said.
The incident comes days after the the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) expelled Islamist fighters of al-Nusra Front and ISIS from the Kurdish city of Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain. The General Command of the YPG issued a statement assuring the full control of the Kurdish forces over the entire city on Wednesday, forcing Islamist fighters to withdraw from the city towards the Turkish borders.
Moreover, clashes occurred between both groups in the Kurdish town of Girke Lege over the last tow days, and the fighting didn’t reach an end yet.
At least 50 jihadist and Kurdish fighters were killed in fighting in northern Syria this week alone, according to a toll released earlier Saturday by the Observatory.
