Girke Lege, Qamishli, Syria − On Monday, a helicopter belonging to the Syrian regime launched raids on sites of the Kurdish armed forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) near the Kurdish town of Girke Lege, north-eastern Syria.
The raid came after Islamist militants were expelled from different regions near the border with Turkey after several clashes with the Kurdish forces.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the Syrian helicopters have targeted strongholds of the YPG near the town of Girke Lege in al-Hasakah province, resulting in the death of dozens of Kurdish fighters and an unknown numbers were injured.
As the Syrian opposition accuses the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) of loyalty to the Assad regime, observers pointed out that the shelling came after the visit of Saleh Muslim −the joint head of the PYD− to Turkey with respect to a PYD proposal to start a self-administration in the areas where Kurds form a majority north and north-east of Syria.
The regime forces shelled strongholds of the Kurdish armed group of Jabhat al-Akrad brigade which was fighting alongside the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Sheikh Maksoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo, north Syria. But recently, Jabhat al-Akrad joined the YPG to fight against Islamist fighters in the Kurdish region.
The Observatory added that the Syrian helicopters bombed sites where fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra were based in al-Hasakah provence, pointing out that the Islamist fighters attacked a barrier of the YPG in the village of Mazlouma in Southern countryside of Tirbe Spi (al-Qahtaniyah) after Friday midnight. The clashes resulted in the death of two Kurdish fighters and five extremists.
“The clashes spread to reach the villages of Taya and Chelka, as areas in Sere Kaniye/Ras Al Ain have been bombed by the ISIS fighters and Jabhat al-Nusra,” The Observatory said.
Remarkably, since the Kurdish forces of the YPG have controlled the city of Sere Kaniye last week −while Islamists have been expelled from the city− heavy weapons have been used by the ISIS and al-Nusra fighters during their clashes with the Kurdish forces, causing dozens of casualties among civilians.
In a linked context, the village of al-Janidiya (located between Gike Lege “Ma’badeh” and Tel Kocher “al-Yarubiya”) on the border with Iraq, has been attacked with heavy weapons by the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra fighters. “A bomb was exploded yesterday near the Customs building in Qaddour Bek neighborhood in the city of Qamishli/Qamishlo where members of the YPG were passing by,” sources said.
