Aazaz, Aleppo, Syria − As the clashes between the opposition forces of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Islamist groups in Syria increased, the FSA-linked brigade of Isar al-Sham in Aleppo accused the al-Qaeda linked group of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) of loyalty to the Syrian regime.
Isar al-Sham brigade issued a statement declaring its fighters readiness to confront the ISIS group and defeat them in Azaz city, near Aleppo, where the ISIS members took over power more than a month ago, to fill the security vacuum in the area after the withdrawal of the Assad military from Azaz, according to Isar al-Sham leadership.
“We will turn the city of Azaz into a cemetery for them (in reference to ISIS group) and their hired mercenaries,” the Isar al-Sham said on Tuesday.
The brigade’s statement indicated to a “treachery” by the al-Qaeda linked ISIS for the FSA armed factions in cities of Raqqa, Idlib, Hasakah, and the countryside of Latakia, in addition to al-Bab, Jarablos in the countryside of Aleppo.
Although the Isar al-Sham brigade adopts an Islamic agenda in Aleppo’s suburbs, its members consider themselves “genuine participants” in the anti-Assad rebellion in Syria and refuse to cooperate with any rebel factions, even if Islamic groups, with links to the Syrian regime.
“Fighters of Daash (Arabic name for ISIS) broke their promises and commitment to the Sharia (Islamic law) by fighting against our forces in Azaz and other northern areas,” the Isar al-Sham statement said, adding the names of armed factions and Islamic leaders as “witnesses on the ISIS violations”, including the Liwa al-Tawhid and Muhammad’s Army, al-Amer Abu Obeida Masri, and Abu Ibrahim al-Shishani.
The statement strongly condemned practices of the Islamic State in Iraq ans Sham group in northern Syria, accusing its members of “apparent loyalty to Assad regime”.
Fierce clashes broke out between the Free Syrian Army battalions and the ISIS fighters in several areas near Aleppo and Raqqa after the ISIS declared its independence of the opposition’s Syrian National Coalition and the FSA, which the latter considered an implicit announcement of loyalty to Assad.
