Kurdish man tortured to death by Syria Islamists

Tel Abyad, Syria− Mohammed Ibrahim Kendal is a Kurdish resident of Syria’s Tel Abyad who was detained by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL) since more than two months. Kendal died in detention and his body was handed over to his family on Wednesday.

Locals said that Kendal was first kidnapped by the Islamist group of Abu al-Raad near Sukkariya village in the western suburb of Tel Abyad two months ago. Members of the group handed the victim over to the ISIL, which kept him in detention for two months before announcing that the young Kurdish man has died.

Mohammed Ali, a human rights activist based in Tel Abyad, stated to ARA News that Kendal has been summarily executed by ISIL “without any reason”.

“When Kendal’s father went to ISIL to ask about the destiny of his son, the group refused to provide the father with any information. Later on, Kenal’s father heard about the death of his son in detention, but ISIL prevented him from seeing the victim of receiving his body,” said Ali. “ISIL members said that they need to investigate how Kendal died, denying involvement in his death although he was held in detention by the group (ISIL).”

According to Kendal’s family, effects of torture were apparent on different parts of the victim’s dead body.

Kendal was buried on Thursday in the village of Kharbassan −50km west of Tel Abyad, northeast of Syria. Due to the state of terror caused by ISIL’s control over the area, Kendal’s family couldn’t protest the murder of their son or investigate the conditions of his death.

Dozens of Syrian Kurds have been detained, tortured and killed by Islamist groups in northern Syria over the last two years, while hundreds of families were reportedly displaced due to the escalating violence.
