Darbasiyah, Syria– A source close to the family of a former female fighter of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) stated to ARA News that family members of the former YPG fighter, Hanan Farhad Haj Yunis, 15 years old from the village of Sheikh Fatime in the countryside of Darbasiyah city, have been subjected to continuous harassment by the YPG forces after Hanan decided to leave the ranks of the YPG.

The source (who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of persecution) said that on the 7th of this April, YPG members stormed into the village of Sheikh Fatime and demanded the family of the former YPG fighter to either hand her over, or another family member will have to replace her in the ranks of the YPG forces −affiliated with the Democratic Union Party (PYD).

“After the family refused to comply with their orders, they arrested the mother of Hanan (the former YPG fighter) and released her a few days later,” the source added.

The same source pointed out that on the 19th of this April and in the late hours of the night, members of the YPG forces raided for the second time the village of Sheikh Fatime and arrested this time the father and the uncle of the former YPG fighter.

“Their whereabouts is still unknown,” the source told ARA News

Notably, the YPG forces is the military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD). The forces are in control over areas where Kurds constitute a majority in north and northeastern Syria, after the withdrawal of the Syrian regime’s security and military units from those areas in Summer 2012. The PYD has been accused by rival Kurdish parties and other opposition groups of cooperation and coordination with the Syrian regime and of trying to exclude other Kurdish political forces in Syria by profiting from its military control on the ground.
