Kobane, Syria− Activists in Raqqa city published on Wednesday images online showing strong bruises on the back of a young man who reportedly was whipped by members of the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The victim was harassed after he was caught smoking in the public road of Raqqa, central Syria, according to activists.

ISIL group has earlier banned smoking in the the city −which submits to the group’s full control since months.

Haitham al-Ahmad, an activist based in Raqqa, told ARA News that this incident comes within a “series of human rights violations” committed by ISIL group after its full control over Raqqa province, which is currently considered the main group’s stronghold in Syria.

“The ISIL recently issued a series of decisions restricting public freedoms, where it (ISIL) banned smoking and concerts, as imposed on shop owners to close their shops in order to perform the five daily prayers exclusively in mosques,” al-Ahmad said.

“An individual has been subjected to forty lashes because he was minutes late for a prayer timing. On the other hand, women are obliged to wear the veil when they are outdoors,” al-Ahmad said. “ISIL members distributed posters in the city; calling on women to adhere to the Islamic dress according to fatwas issued by the so-called ISIL-led Sharia Councils”.

Meanwhile, activists launched an anti-ISIL campaign on the social networking sites under the banner of “Raqqa is silently slaughtered” (in reference to ISIL practices in the city). Activists who launched the campaign argue that their action aims to reveal the “crimes of this radical group” in the city.
