Deir ez-Zor, Syria – On Sunday, militants of al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (IS) controlled al-Shaitat area in Deir ez-Zor countryside after clashes with tribal rebels. Dozens were reported dead during two weeks of clashes.
Al-Shaitat was considered the last anti-IS area in Deir ez-Zor province, east of Syria. After controlling al-Shaitat, the Islamic State has now power over the entire province of Deir ez-Zor, beside the previously controlled Syrian province of Raqqa.
Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, opposition activist Fayiz Abdulazizi reported that IS militants imposed on Sunday their control over all villages in al-Shaitat, including Abu Hamam, Kishkiyah ang Gharanij.
“At least 25 tribal rebels were captured and summarily executed by the Islamic State on Sunday evening,” Abdulaziz said. “While IS lost 7 fighters during the fierce clashes over the last two weeks.”
