Istanbul, Turkey After an official statement by the Syrian regime claimed it was providing weapons to the Kurdish fighters defending the border city of Kobane against militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), leadership of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –a main Kurdish group fighting IS in Kobane– denied the regime’s announcement, stressing that the only weapons received by the Kurdish forces in Kobane were through the U.S.-led warplanes coming from Iraqi Kurdistan.

“The statement of the regime’s Information Minister Omran Zoabi that the Syrian army provided military and logistic support for our units is completely untrue,” a statement by the YPG leadership said on Thursday.

The Kurdish leadership asserted that the YPG fighters have been fighting IS for five weeks “without any assistance whatsoever”.

On Monday, Syrian Information Minister Omran Zoabi told governmental media outlets in Damascus on Monday that the Assad regime had provided military and logistic aid to Kobane’s fighters.

“The Syrian government will keep providing the support with all its efforts because this is a life and death issue,” Zoabi said.

He also emphasized that Kobane remains a part of the Syria and it’s every Syrian’s duty to defend it, adding the regime’s refusal for any project of establishing autonomous entities in the north will be a redline –in reference to Syrian Kurdish forces and their successful efforts to secure the Kurdish region in northern Syria from the effects of ISIS and the ongoing war.

“The Syrian government will not give up its military, political, social, economic and humanitarian role in any area, regardless of its size,” Zoabi said.
