Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), Syria – The French former Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, arrived Friday in the Kurdish city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in Hasakah province, northeastern Syria, on a visit to fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) who are combating the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS).
Kouchner, who was accompanied by the official spokesman of the YPG Redoor Khalil, was received by the field commander of the YPG forces in the city of Sere Kaniye on the border with Turkey, and the head of the Relations Committee in the YPG, Hussein Kocher.
The delegation passed through the city of Qamishli heading to the fighting fronts of Sere Kaniye, and visited several Kurdish military locations in the area.
Commenting on this visit, the Kurdish researcher Mohsen Seida stated to ARA News that this visit is considered “a supportive symbolic one rather than an official one”.
“Kouchner is known for his support to the Kurdish cause, and his visit should not be framed in the interest of any particular Kurdish political party (in reference to PYD),” Seida said.
Noteworthy, a delegation from the Danish Parliament arrived in Qamishli a week ago, and visited several cities in al-Jazeera Canton (Hasakah province), which is administrated by the Democratic Union Party (PYD).
