Istanbul, Turkey – Hadi al-Bahra, the president of the Syrian National Coalition for Revolutionary Forces and the Opposition (SNC), said that the continuity of Russia’s military support to the Assad regime prevents reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

“Russia cannot play any role in finding a political solution in Syria as long as it continues providing weapons, ammunition and warplanes to the Assad regime,” Bahra told reporters in Ankara.

After holding an official meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mawlood Jawish Oglu, al-Bahra told the Turkish media in the capital Ankara: “We exchanged views on the most important developments in Syria in general, and the city of Aleppo, in particular.”

On the proposal made by the Special Envoy of the United Nations, Staffan de Mistura, of “freezing” the fighting in the city of Aleppo, al-Bahra said that the proposal contains some “questionable details”, stressing that the SNC will make a final decision on the matter “after de Mistura submits the final version of his proposal”.

The SNC’s president also emphasized that Russia needs to change its position towards the Syrian crisis and “stop providing weapons to the Assad regime”.

“Only then we can consider Russia a part of the solution,” he said.

“A comprehensive political solution is needed in Syria, because the fire of this war has started spreading across the region and violence could intensify, especially in Lebanon and Iraq.”

Al-Bahra pointed out that the existence of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) is a threat to Syria and Iraq, as well as Turkey, adding that getting rid of this threat requires a “military solution”, and that “ISIS emerged in Syria as a result of the Assad regime’s brutal policies.”
