Afrin, Syria – Syria’s al-Qaeda affiliation, al-Nusra Front, shelled residential neighborhoods in the Kurdish region of Afrin in northern Syria. At least five civilians were killed and dozens injured, local sources reported on Saturday.

Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) responded to Nusra attack by shelling the group’s headquarters in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

“Nusra militants shelled the villages of Deir Ballout and Diyewa near Jinderis town in Afrin countryside. The mortars hit residential buildings where more than five people were killed and dozens injured,” civil rights activist Farhad Semo told ARA News in Afrin.

“Among the injured was the head of Diyewa village Muhammad Hussein,” the source said, adding that the wounded civilians were transferred to the hospital of Afrin city for treatment.

A spokesman for the YPG told ARA News that the Kurdish forces responded to the attack by artillery fire that hit headquarters of al-Nusra Front in Atmah village north of Aleppo.

Violence resumed in Afrin after months of a truce between Kurdish YPG forces and Nusra militants. A YPG fighter told ARA News that their forces had reached a truce with Nusra militants in the northwestern countryside of Aleppo. “However, some of Nusra’s militants are apparently trying to resume the fighting with our forces.”

Nusra Front is Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda. The group shares control with Syrian Islamist rebels in Aleppo, Idlib and Qunaitra. Following months of fighting, Nusra reached a truce with Kurdish forces of the YPG in the northern countryside of Aleppo nearly seven months ago. However, clashes resumed after Nusra attacked residential neighborhoods in Afrin last July.
