Urfa, Turkey – On Monday, members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) targeted a Turkish army convoy with an explosive device in Hakkari province, southeast Turkey. Two soldiers were killed and five others injured in the deadly explosion, Turkish army said.

“The explosion hit an army convoy near the Takali village in Şemdinli sub-district of Hakkari province on Monday,” the army said in a statement, blaming the PKK for the attack.

The injured were reportedly transferred to a nearby hospital in Şemdinli.

Security officials said that the Turkish army sent military reinforcements to Hakkari province in order to combat PKK fighters, who launched a series of attacks in southeastern Turkey during which more than 55 soldiers were killed in the last few weeks.

This comes amid intensified Turkish airstrikes on PKK positions in northern Iraq that has killed more than 200 Kurdish fighters in two weeks.
