TEL ABYAD – Clashes broke out between Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the vicinity of Tel Abyad town in the northeastern Syrian province of Raqqa, military sources reported on Friday.

“Subsequent to an offensive by ISIS terrorists on villages near Tel Abyad town, fierce clashes took place in the area between the radical group and YPG forces,” a spokesman for the Kurdish YPG forces told ARA News.

Nuraddin Gaban reported that ISIS militants launched an attack on areas stretching from Ain Issa to Tel Abyad in northern Raqqa on Thursday, “which to led clashes that continued until Friday evening”.

The source added that more than five ISIS militants were killed before the group’s withdrawal towards its main headquarters in Raqqa city.

“We have lost two of our bravest fighters in the clashes. But we were finally able to repel the terrorists’ attack,” the YPG spokesman said.

Gaban added that the YPG has seized weapons and ammunition that was left behind by ISIS militants before retreating from the clashes’ locations.

In the meantime, the YPG General Command issued a statement saying that ISIS group infiltrated into the village of Ser Giran near Tel Abyad on Thursday evening, adding that the group withdrew after being exposed to heavy artillery shelling by the Kurdish forces.

In June, Kurdish forces of the YPG and allied Syrian rebels, supported by the U.S.-led coalition’s air cover, liberated the strategic town of Tel Abyad in the northern countryside of Raqqa province and regained its crossing on the Turkish border after fierce battles against the radical group of the Islamic State.
