QAMISHLI – The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) on Thursday accused the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party (AKP) of having a ‘coup-like’ mentality for declaring a three-months state of emergency after the failed coup attempt, and urged the government and international community to support democracy in Turkey.
“This step shows the coup attempt might have been blocked, but the desire to rule the country with coup-like, authoritative mentality is not,” the HDP said in a statement.
“In this period Turkey will be ruled by Decree-laws against the constitution, the Council of Ministers will be chaired by the President, the jurisdiction of governors will be increased, and vital universal and democratic human rights will be violated while the Turkish Presidential System will be impose without restraint,” the HDP added.
“Thus, the coup attempt has become a tool and opportunity for the government to purge all opposition and limit democratic rights and freedom,” it said.
Therefore, the HDP says a democratic solution should be considered, and that the pro-Kurdish HDP party will not take a side in the conflict between the coup plotters and the Turkish government.
“A democratic solution regarding the destructive coup was not considered, society has been forced to choose between a coup or an undemocratic government. We absolutely deny these choices,” the HDP stated. “AKP’s efforts to become the absolute power and reinforce one-man-rule by declaring a state of emergency will lead our country to a more painful course.”
The Kurdish party called on all organizations and the international community to support democracy in Turkey. “Our immediate need is democracy and freedom. The way out of the coup, the conflicted state and current chaos is not a more authoritarian one-man-rule, but more democracy,” the party said.
While the Kurdish party denounced the decisions by the ruling party as undemocratic, the Turkish ruling AKP party said the protests against the coup showed the democratic mentality.
On 21 July, the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on Turkish citizens to continue their protests. “My dear nation; do not give up the heroic resistance that you have shown for your country, your homeland and your flag. We continue our resistance and guarding of democracy to teach a lesson to the treacherous (FETÖ [Fethullahçı Terör Örgütü]) terrorists who have attempted to occupy your country.”
