The United States does not intend to stay in Syria after defeating ISIS terror group, the US Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert said during a press briefing on Friday.

“That is not our plan, our intent is to defeat ISIS,” Nauert said when asked if the United States plans to stay in Syria after defeating ISIS.

“Syria must be governed by its own people and not by the United States or other forces,” Nauert stated.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis have previously testified before Congress that the coalition’s successful operations in Iraq and Syria against ISIS are depriving the terror group of territory.
