Hasakah under fire as clashes continue between Syrian forces and Islamists

Hasakah, Syria – On Tuesday, Syrian regime forces renewed shelling on locations of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in the city of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, with heavy artillery and warplanes, local activists reported.

Regime forces pounded IS strongholds in the Villat Homr district and Geweran neighborhood in Hasakah.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, civil rights activist Raman Hassan reported that the regime forces targeted IS-held neighborhoods with heavy artillery and airstrikes. 

The source pointed out that IS militants resumed bombing the Kurdish neighborhoods of Mufti and Salihiya with mortar shells, causing substantial damage. 

No casualties were reported among civilians –most of whom evacuated their houses, according to local activists. 

Mohammed Rashad, a citizen from Mufti in Hasakah, told ARA News that three new shells fell on the eastern parts of the Mufti neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, adding that another eight shells landed on the same area on Monday.

“Other four shells landed in the vicinity of Students Confederation building in Hasakah. There are no casualties,” an eyewitness told ARA News. 

Media activist Adnan Ahmed reported that few IS-fired shells hit the Raees Square in the central market of Hasakah city, adding that other shells landed near the bus station of Tel Hajar. 

In the meantime, Media Center of the Kurdish Asayish forces in Hasakah announced that the source of these shells is the IS-held Filaha village east of Hasakah and as-Sadkob district south of the city.

Also on Tuesday, the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced that the YPG forces were able to expel IS terrorists from the villages of Marouf and Hamraa after two days of clashes.
