KOBANE – Western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) regained the Tishreen Dam on the Euphrates River after clashes with militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS).

The Tishreen Dam, which has been under ISIS’s control for nearly two years, was the main supply route for the radical group between Raqqa province and the northern countryside of Aleppo.

“Subsequent to fierce clashes with ISIS terrorists, our forces were able to regain control of the Tishreen Dam and its surroundings,” spokesman of the Kurdish-Arab alliance of SDF, Sharvan Darwish, told ARA News.

“The terror group tried to impeded our progress by carrying out several car bomb attacks against our positions, but our SDF units were eventually able to expel ISIS terrorists from the strategic dam,” Darwish said.

By losing the Tishreen Dam ISIS is considered to have lost one of its most strategic supply lines, as the dam severed the group to move its militants and weapons between its main bastion of Raqqa and the cities of Manbij and Jarablous in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

“This is one of our main victories against ISIS terrorists in the SDF’s new campaign in southern Kobane,” the spokesman said.

The SDF leadership has also confirmed its complete control of Tishreen Dam along with the liberation of several villages in the area.

Units of the SDF, which include Kurdish, Arab and Christian fighters, have earlier regained the villages of Saharij, Jabbad, Abidat, Marwaha, Mazra’a and al-Mansiyah near Kobane after bombing ISIS positions with heavy artillery.

The SDF, which has earlier recaptured more than 220 villages and towns in Hasakah province from ISIS, announced three days ago the start of a new military campaign against the extremist group south of Kobane.
